The Great Story and Your Story

The Great Story and Your Story
Connecting the Bible to Everyday Lives
By: Richard L Morgan and Beth Sanders

A 10 week Bible Study is available online.
Available: May 1, 2008

This book was created for churches, small groups, retirement communities and nursing homes and seekers of truth. The authors give down-to-earth accounts of ten Biblical stories, relating each one to the author’s lives, and then challenges group participants to see the relationship between the Biblical stories and their own. Through ten studies, the participants will connect their stories with the Biblical message and even do autobiographical writings. Such a study leads to the development of a legacy, strong friendships and deepening of the spiritual life.

Participants in a Great Story/Your Story class have said:

"This book has helped our group not only relearn stories of the Bible but relate them to our own lives. As a student of the Bible for many years, this has been a new exerience that goes beyond information to transformation of life."

- High School Teacher -

"Working through the book brought us together from a separate people who share Sunday together to an intimate group willing to share who we are and begin to be a community of mutual support for discipleship."

- Consultant for Families -

The material brought a group to a new way of sharing that was unique to the Church, and the core of what the Christian fellowship is all about - true koinonia."

-Retired School Teacher -

I don't like to write, so my wife dragged me to this class. Was I surprised! I was able to join right into the conversations and talk about my life, including a tour in Viet Nam. It was a safe place to tell my story, because I trusted the group. A mix of strangers became a bonded community of love.

- Maintenance Director -

Beth Sanders is also available to lead LifeBio training groups across the nation.

Settling In
My First Year in a Retirement Community
(Enlarged Print)

Morgan speaks frankly about the losses and realities as he approached his own not-yet-frail "fourth quarter" (after age 75). Drawing from his journals of those sometimes agonizing months, he takes us through his decision to move to a long-term facility and the first year of settling in. Morgan addresses the fears of life after 75: loss of health, cognitive ability, short-term memory, independence and status. Fifty-two scripture passages, meditations and prayers offer hope for those along this intense pilgrimage. Morgan's soul-baring reflections are invaluable for those considering a move to a retirement community, current residents, their family and friends, and staff of facilities.

Richard Morgan’s Settling In is not a slick brochure for retirement living.  You won’t find well-selected words describing the amenities of a retirement center.  In fact, reading Morgan’s book is like sneaking into the pages of a real-life adventure where you are privy to a first-hand account of what life is really like at a retirement community.

With each successive chapter, Morgan invites the reader to pull back the curtain on yet another leg of the adventure, beginning with his decision to move from his beloved North Carolina community to a retirement facility near Pittsburgh, PA.  Battling insecurities and questioning friends, Morgan courageously keeps it real, articulating both the joy and pain of transitioning to this new season of life. Thankfully he does not gloss over the mixed bag of feelings that come with such a life change.  Yet as he grapples with the hard realities of growing old, he mines the greater spiritual truths about God’s faithfulness and His call to serve others.

It is a book of hope and surprise for older adults considering a move to a retirement community.  It is a book of gratitude and transparency for family members and friends of older adults.  And for every reader, it is a gentle reminder of what it really means to settle in.

In the Shadow of Grace

In The Shadow of Grace
By: Richard L Morgan, Howard Morgan, and John Morgan, eds.

Available Now!

In the Shadow of Grace pulls together some of G. Campbell Morgan's unpublished writings on dealing with confrontation in life, bringing comfort to readers who struggle with life's difficulties. Covering subjects from shattered dreams, the deaths of friends and family, rejection, and facing the end of life, this tender and hopeful book will encourage and strengthen readers to face trials with courage and fortitude.

Readers will also get a rare glimpse into the personal life and struggles of Morgan. The book is edited by his three grandsons, who tie Morgan's writings to real events in his life, showing us how the great preacher himself responded to trying times.

The book conveys the kind of paradox that speaks to me of depth and complexity. It reads very well and captures Morgan’s gift for preaching. What I found especially powerful was the cadence of his language and his ability to bring the Bible right into a person’s heart. So I was grateful to hear his words and course his topics touch all our own struggles as well as his own.

- Kathleen R. Fischer, Spiritual Director and Author -

Each chapter of Morgan’s book brings together the difficulties and challenges he was facing with his sermons and writings he delivered at that time. … It presents a unique look into the mind and spiritual life of a man who was greatly used by God in his generation.

- Bible Geek Gone Wild, Book Review -

Campbell Morgan was named one of the 10 greatest preachers in the 20th century. However, many in this century have no knowledge of the power and timeliness of his messages. This book by three grandsons reintroduces Morgan to this century. It brings comfort and strength to all who live in the shadow of God’s grace. It will preach.

Autumn Wisdom

Autumn Wisdom
A Book of Readings by Richard L Morgan
(Just republished)

A collection of 81 stories and words which describe the wisdom of older people. Drawn from the author's experience as a pastor, counselor and friend, and other wisdom teachers, the book makes good reading for older people or their adult children. As the boomer generation is aging and will face retirement soon, this would provide insights from what the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria call their older people, "wisdom people."

"Most older people we have known may not have made the history books, but they have made the history - of our families, our churches, our communities, our nations. Richard Morgan teaches us to once again listen to the stories of our elders because they are our history, our real history. Morgan helps us see - through the stories and words of those best suited to offer useful answers - namely those who have already been there - that for Christians aging is an experience we do not have to confront alone."

- Stephen Sapp, Dean of Religious Studies, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida -

From Grim To Green Pastures
Meditations for the Sick and Their Caregivers
by Richard L Morgan

"Richard L. Morgan's From Grim to Green Pastures writes of reflections that came to him during his time of illness. This book offers 81 two-page meditations properly sized for those who are being cared for, or those who busily care for them. He excerpts about a "spirituality of illness," serve us well.

- Martin E. Marty, The Christian Century -

"For the day when I am ill again I keep a mental list of books I would take to the hospital. From Grim to Greener Pastures joins that list. As a witness to illness, Dick Morgan, tells the truth. Whether you reread this book as a pastoral guide through illness or as spiritual preparation for the day you too become ill, it can bring grace to suffering."

Is There Life After Divorce?

Is There Life After Divorce in the Church?
by Richard L Morgan

"Richard L. Morgan has produced a welcome resource for those of us who have been divorced and felt we were beyond the pale of the Christian community. It is true that Jesus speaks against divorce, but it is also true that some New Testament scholars believe he was speaking to protect the rights of the oppressed under ancient law -- the oppressed being women. On the other hand, divorce is a painful experience that impacts over half of those who married. It cannot be ignored by religious leaders (some of whom themselves may be divorced). If we believe in acknowledging sin without casting the sinner out, we need to find ways of healing in churches. I always reminded myself in giving sermons that if national statistics were right, half of my listeners had been impacted by divorce."

- Rev. Dr. John C. Morgan, minister, teacher, and author of 'Awakening the Soul' -

No Act of Love Is Ever Wasted:  Spiritual Pathways for Caregivers and Persons with Dementia
By Jane M. Thibault and Richard L. Morgan

This book will present caregiving as a spiritual path for caregivers and persons with Alzheimers disease or other forms of dementia. The book holds special significance for the growing number of caregivers who have loved ones diagnosed with these diseases of the brain. It will show how care giving can move beyond a medical model to a person centered model of care. It offers spiritual help for those struggling with the 36 hour a day care at home for loved ones, or who place them in care facilities. It makes it clear that caregiving can be a ministry of love by "being present" and creating new styles of worship. It offers hope to burdened caregivers that there is spiritual help for the challenges they face.
